PLAYGROUND HISTORY

The elementary playground was installed in 2008, shortly after Stokes School moved to its current location on Oakview Terrace.  The playground was part of a KaBOOM! community build project.  While the playground served us well over 10 years, it is at the end of its useful life and time for an updated space where our our scholars can learn and play.

The Pre-K playground was installed in 2012.  The primary features of the space are the play houses and small climbing bridge.  These have lasted over the years, but now need to be replaced.  A new climbing structure was added in 2017 and remains in good condition.

  • During the 2016-2017 school year, the PTA convened a playground committee to conduct research on the community’s needs and desires for play spaces, and to research the market of local vendors.

  • In 2017, the committee conducted surveys of students and families and identified desires for swings, climbing structures, and a water feature, among other playground elements.

  • In May 2018, the playground committee presented to the PTA regarding two potential providers:  Landscape Structures, the company that built the Turkey Thicket and other DC Department of Parks and Recreation facilities, and EarlySpace LLC, a local, woman-owned business that has designed nature-based playgrounds in many local schools and parks.

  • On May 2, 2018, the PTA voted to move forward with EarlySpace LLC. Stokes PTA contracted their design services.

  • EarlySpace conducted a charrette in Fall 2018 by engaging the Stokes School community, including parents, students, teachers, and staff to identify goals for the play spaces and specific play elements were of interest. In October 2018, EarlySpace presented a master plan and budget for both the pre-K space and the elementary playground.
