Description and features of new space

Principal features of the elementary playground will include:

  • Dedicated ball play area

  • Fallen tree, boulders, and stumps for climbing

  • Multi-texture and balance paths

  • Bench or nest swings

  • Terraced retaining walls and plantings throughout the space

 

Principal features of the Pre-K playground will include:

  • An “inside space” such as a playhouse or tipi-like structure

  • A “high space” such as a loft or perch

  • Stationary boulders and logs for climbing

  • Medium-sized sticks that students can move

  • Small “loose parts” that students can use in creative play

 

Design phases and cost breakdown

The next stage of the process will be design development and permitting.  This will provide a great deal more detail on the steps of the project, and help us fundraise accordingly.

 

As required by the DC Public Charter School board, we will engage in a competitive bid solicitation for construction services.  After the bidding process, the committee will choose a final firm and complete the design development and construction plans.

 

The preliminary estimate to redevelop the elementary playground and upper parking area is around $250,000.

 

Permitting and professional engineering services will total approximately $50,000.
